As of January 2006, it became a legal requirement to secure ALL swimming pools to prevent children being accidentally injured or drowned.
However, there's a big difference between what you may need to comply with the law, and what you need in real life, to give peace of mind and security for you and your guests.
Current regulations allow you to secure your pool in one of 5 ways:

Swimming pool fence An approved fence system to prevent children entering the pool area unsupervised. |

Swimming pool cover A cover whichwill take the weight of adult and prevent them from being immersed. |

Pool shelter (abri) A rigid, retractable, raised structure over the pool, which prevents access. |

Perimeter alarm Perimeter alarms sound on detection of movement through an infra-red boundary surrounding the pool. |

Immersion alarm Immersion alarms are designed to sound on detection of movement in the swimming pool. |
As the owner of a private swimming pool, you are liable to a fine of 45,000 euros if your pool is found not to comply with the new legislation. That rises to 225,000 euros for commercial or shared pools (i.e. pools shared between villas, hotel and restaurant pools or camping site pools).
